9-fluorenone was reacted with hydrazine hydrate in refluxing ethanol to form 9-fluorene hydrazone.
After cooling to room temperature, the reaction mixture is over saturated, and agitating it with a spatula sets off crystallisation into fine yellow needle-like crystals.

Crystallization is awesome and fun to watch, and often results in highly pure products. This stuff was 99.5+% pure after filtration and a cold EtOH rinse.

I need this compound for the synthesis of a cisplatin based anti-cancer drug.
