Ongoing research on spinal cord injuries may change the way we think about the prognosis for patients with paralysis caused by Spinal Cord Injuries (SCIs). SCIs are a major public health burden, affecting hundreds of thousands of people living the US—including tens of thousands injured while serving in the military. On June 11, 2014, renowned experts in the field—Roderic Pettigrew, Mary Bartlett Bunge, and Wise Young—spoke at a AAAS event in Washington, DC, about these issues. Rep. Chaka Fattah gave the opening remarks and Alan Leshner moderated.
