Natalia Zagorska-Thomas is an artist and freelance textiles conservator. This generally means getting up close and fiddly with all kinds of material culture including costumes, rugs, furniture, furnishings and textile-based art.

Talking about two recent projects -- a Chesapeake flag from the War of 1812 and a ballet costume by Leon Bakst for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes -- Natalia reveals one of the biggest concerns in conservation today - interpretation.
