Due to increasing drought conditions during summer months in the Northeast, many farmers are asking: what are alternative pasture management strategies to maximize forage productivity while protecting the environment during drought conditions? The irrigation of pastures or hay fields reduces regrowth period and extends the growing season allowing for another grazing. Irrigation is widely used in the Midwest due to prolonged periods of drought, especially during the summer slump. We have seen results in Swanton, Vermont that have shown it to be beneficial and profitable. This material is based upon work supported by USDA/NIFA under Award Number 2012-49200-20031.
