Derek Randall was a woderful cricketter, and it was Derek's wonderful ethic as a player that improved and bettered David Gower as a player.
I remember people throwing oranges at him during a test match which I attended and he gamely threw them back save the occasional one which he would peel and eat. And after hamming it up for the crowd, he would immediately go into game mode and make a spectacular stop, including a catch that made the batsman do a double-take. I know amazing is a tired cliche but it fit him to a tee.
Derek Randall was like a whippet/Kangaroo crossbreed on steroids. An unorthodox hero from my childhood who kept me out in the garden til dark trying to emulate his fielding and wicket throws. What a star!

I remember seeing Jeff Thomson take a ripper outfield catch in a Test at the SCG in the mid to late 70's, but can't find a clip of it anywhere. I think Greg Chappel scored 187 in the same match. Anyone know the details of this test and Thommo's catch?

Derek Randall of England was a fun loving guy and what a catch, he takes, going sideways and back to pluck out a real beauty. One of the great fielders of his era. I remember his as a bloke, who enjoyed his cricket and entertained the crowd with his antics. A superb batsman, too. Centenary test in Melbourne in 1975, I reckon, where Randall scored 175 against the Aussies.

"That mun Derek Randall" classic commentary from the great Freddie Trueman, almost as good as the catch itself.
my mates and I used to set up classic catches in my front yard just so we could scream out  "WHAT A MAGNIFICENT CATCH '"
I watched him once in a test match and he was also a bit of a clown on the field, hamming it up for the spectators one minute but effecting a spectacular save the very next.
Has anyone got any film the great DR doing that somersault/flip/cartwheel after another fantastic catch sometime? Would love to see it again.
