From 2008-2010 Tom directed the independent Inquiry into the Future for Lifelong Learning. From 2003-2008 he was Head of the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) at OECD, the Paris-based international think tank. Before that Tom was Dean of the Faculty of Continuing Education and Professor of Lifelong Learning at Birkbeck; and co-director of the Research Centre on the Wider Benefits of Learning.

He is currently writing a book on The Paula Principle: how and why women work below their level of competence.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
