On the second day of the DET, Sticky and I were going to chase a 2-ship out to the boat so we could get additional shots from overhead the carrier. As we climbed out from Cecil as the dash-3, it quickly became clear that the student in the dash-2 position was having a serious problem. During the pre-flight, the emergency gear handle needs to be checked for proper placement. If the handle is out of position, it can cause the gear to fail to retract correctly, and that is what happened to this student. Check out the realtime take-off sequence that ends with an in-flight emergency and a very short CQ flight for this rattled student.
