This is part 5 of a multi- part tutorial of doing Model Railroad Scenery using extruded construction foam. More Carving. Wow I had more of the clips than I had originally thought...

I found that Owens Corning makes 3 densities of that foam (150, 250, and 400). I found the 150 at my Home Depot but it seems brittle and leaves more "pock" marks. Nice for desert scenes but smoother would be good for some uses. Have you used the Foamular 400 yet?

Thanks to your lesson I am getting very nice results compared to plaster cloth covered with plaster especially for desert scenes. Couple of questions - I get many small pock marks when I use that same rasp which look OK for weathered desert. Have you ever tried a hot knife sculpting tool? Your's looks smoother but hard to tell in the video. I am using OC Foamula 150 so I wonder if it is more brittle.

Dan - you should also try service-partners.c o m for a local branch that can deliver it. Ask for Dow Scoreboard insulation if no Foamular avail.

It's Owens Corning FOAMULAR® 250 Rigid Foam Insulation. you should be able to get it at any home improvement store like Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, etc. I hear though its harder to get if you live in a warmer climate.

what kind of foam is that, i cant seem to find it anywhere on the internet?

It appears that there MUST be a better tool for what your doing, or why not just use a stanly knife ? I'm just starting to get my ideas together now so i know nothing more than you. My point was this seemed to take a while considering it's foam.. I expected it to be easier, though i think i may use the stuff in the cd for the subterranean train layout, looks easyer to get a good finish.
