Dougie Dalzell served as a lieutenant in the Coldstream Guards. On 18 February 2010, on his 27th birthday, Dougie lost his life whilst commanding 2 Platoon in 1 Company, 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards during Operation Moshtarak in Babaji, Afghanistan.
Dougie died as a result of an IED explosion in the Babaji area of Nahr-e-Saraj in central Helmand during an operation to clear insurgents so that a checkpoint could be built and a road laid through the area. These developments have brought enduring security and freedom of movement to the local Afghan people.
Dougie's platoon suffered from severe casualties during their Herrick 11 tour. Three men in Dougie's platoon also lost their lives whilst others were badly injured by loss of limb, muscle and/or post traumatic stress.
Forefront in Dougie's mind was always the safe return of his men. For this reason, we know his main concern would be the care of those who are injured on operation and who consequently pay a high price. We hope that the Lt Dougie Dalzell MC Memorial Trust will support those who need it.
