So Why Can't the T92 Light Tank Be Parachute Dropped in the 1950s?

Though its light enough at 18.5 tons (37, 000 pounds) to be carried by a new USAF turboprop C-130 Hercules transport, its TOO WIDE at 124 inches to fit inside the Herk!

The bozos at U.S. Army Tank Command didn't bother to go check with what the USAF fly boys were building to make sure their new light tank would even fit? Hence, even if the T92 was accepted for service it would only be able to be airlanded by C-124 Globemaster IIs onto secure runways until wider body jets like the C-141 Starlifter entered service...add that the T92 couldn't swim to meet the PT76 amphitank threat...resulted in the Army going back to the drawing board with the AR/AAV requirement that resulted in the 110 inch wide, 17-ton M551 Sheridan amphibious light tank that could RO-RO from the C-130 as well as be parachute dropped, but begs the question:

WHY NOT SAVE WEIGHT AND COMPLEXITY AND MAKE A LIGHT TANK WITHOUT A TURRETLIKE THE GERMAN STUGS DID IN WW2 AND THE RUSSIANS WERE DOING WITH THE ASU-57 and ASU-85? Like adapting the fantastic AAM-PVF aka 10-ton M113 into a STUG? Or the already-in-service 8-ton M50 Ontos with 6 x recoilless rifles? Or simply buy French AMX-13s which had revolving turrets to keep the paranoid tankers happy?

It seems the #1 problem is finding a light tank the "tankers" are willing to operate. Maybe what we need to do is get some turretless STUGs and have them operated by FIELD ARTILLERYmen--like they were in the German Army in WW2? Or infantry operate their own defacto assault guns by mounting recoilless rifles onto M113 Gavins?
