This is the famous (infamous) song that you may have heard about - but possibly never actually heard. Well, as Frank sings himself "It was the dog-gonest thing you ever heard!". Obviously Dagmar (whom Frank was currently appearing with on stage at the New York Paramount theatre) was not hired for her vocal contributions - her assets were in another area entirely. Dagmar was an amply bosomed blonde of Amazonian proportions who made Jayne Mansfield look like Audrey Hepburn (Will Friedwald's observation). Hot dog WOOF!

But seriously, my personal take on the entire issue with this song is that Frank himself repeatedly called so much attention to this recording in his continued life-long feud with Mitch Miller - and if he did not do that - the song would have been totally forgotten. Indeed, it is the "B" side - many folks did not pay too much attention to "B" sides unless they liked it upon first hearing. Otherwise they ignored it - it was not the reason they purchased the record in the first place. The "A" side of this Columbia record (39425) is "I'm A Fool To Want You" which is one of the most serious, emotional and heartfelt songs Frank ever recorded. So, in the case of "Mama Will Bark" - the more you call attention to it - the more people will know about it. Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" - which sold in the multi-millions - had as it's flip "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" (although "Boogie" was supposed to be the "A" side!!) - but when you think of Patti Page - who remembers "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus"? Orchestra under the direction of Axel Stordahl.
