A moderate risk with an associated 15% tornado probability prompted this marathon of a chase to take place. I left Kansas City, MO at around 9am and made it to my initial target area of Watertown, SD by 4pm. After reviewing forecast models, I decided to head towards Aberdeen, SD as that is where the frontal convergence was at. I saw the storms going up as I made my way west. The first storm to my north and east went tornado warned and I decided that I would head to that storm and chase it until it fell apart. I ended up working my way down the developing line of storms that eventually led me into Minnesota. Just before crossing the state border, I had to reroute due to a small funnel that appeared to have circulation on the ground via power flashes and damage to the town of Big Stone City, SD. I was pounded by RFD winds and blinding rain as I drove into the town and saw debris scattered all over the place. Kind of a scary feeling, for sure. Followed the storms all the way to Appleton, MN before calling it quits and heading back home. I drove nonstop, only stopping for gas, until I made it back home at 6:30am. It was worth it though, in my opinion.
