In 2007 I took my father Milan along with my mother Marlene and son Andrew to Europe to introduce my father to his first cousins and family in Slovenia. We toured Italy, Slovenia and Austria. In this video my father meets his first cousin Joze and wife Kristina at their home in Dobindol just south of Novo Mesto. The day before we had arrived in Ljubljana driving up from Venice, it is about 11am after a one hour drive from our hotel in Ljubljana, and we stayed several days in nearby Dolenjske Toplica. In 1929, Milan's mother left this house (her 1891 birth home) and her family which included her brother, Joze's father Josef, for Canada where my grandfather Dominik had gone a year ahead in 1928 to make a home for his fiance. Two first cousins "reunite" here after 78 years of family separation. I should point out that my father's mother had corresponded with and sent letters to her sister until my grandmother died at age 100 in 2004. This allowed me to take my wife Nancy and our children in 2006 to meet both sides of the family and paved the way to bring my father for this historic visit one year later to meet Joze, one of 4 living first cousins. Several days of yard and vineyard cottage family gatherings ensued with singing, feasting and a very tearful fairwell with a promise to try to return. Sadly cancer would take Joze from us a short 16 months later. We feel greatful we had the chance to meet this dear man and his wife, complete a family tree and exchange many kind letters in cards over this brief period of reconnection.
