Karl begins by discussing the role of the state in 'fixing' markets. The Conversation then turns to the need for financial products to address the high levels of risk in developing countries. In particular, Karl focuses on East Africa where he is currently researching risk in Ugandan agricultural markets and through which he outlines his views on why much of the international policy decisions deployed in the region are perceived to have 'gone wrong'; mixing long term strategies with short term expectations. Karl also argues that the international community should help East African countries face the challenges posed by currency management and investment driven development. Karl also offers his insights on how younger academics and practitioners can begin to pursue a career in development.
