Hops has a long cultural history: in natural medicine, but also in beer brewing, it has been used for centuries. The green plant with the small umbels is considered the "soul of the beer" and not only gives it the typical taste, it also makes the beer durable. The brewers already appreciated that in the Middle Ages.
