Captured on film one balmy summer night, these playful fairy shrimp, interested in my bright flashlight, display their most remarkable colors which are seldom seen unless highlighted in such a way. This temporary, but huge vernal (springtime) pool in Augusta County, Virginia, was as big as a football field. It is hard to imagine that in only a few short weeks this thriving aquatic ecosystem will be reduced to nothing more than a huge plot of cracked, dry earth. These fairy shrimp, Eubranchipus holmani, are of the rarer varieties that survive in warmer weather.
