Leontien van der Knaap, Associate Professor at the International Victimology Institute Tilburg (INTERVICT) explains the importance of research on the effects of online sexual solicitation: "In recent years, concerns about the risks that the Internet poses to children have increased in accordance with the sharp rise in domestic Internet use. Of particular concern to both parents and policy makers is the risk of online sexual solicitation or 'grooming'. However, little is actually known about the consequences of online sexual solicitation or about how many children and youth actually come to harm as a result of online sexual solicitation."
