The Great Lakes region is economically and environmentally fertile, but rapid industrialization and subsequent decay have left behind contaminated waters and humanmade structures that armor the cities against the powerful Lakes. Instead of thinking of this environment simply as a duality -- land and water -- it must be considered interconnected, adaptable, and resilient to environmental and economic forces.
