In Other Words…

All I need…

What is it that you need? … Have you ever loved someone so deeply and so intensely, dangerously and with such abandon that your life changed down to it’s very core? This is a song about that kind of love. This is a song about that kind of person. This is a song about that someone that drives you to be a better person. The one who shows you another way to live. This is about that connection that comes once or maybe twice (if your lucky) in a lifetime and has the potential to drown you. This is about a love that takes you over. Whether you call it a soulmate or a true love, it’s the kind of thing that alters your path inexorably and has the potential to define or destroy a life. The longing, the needing, the intensity and ultimately, the hope that it brings we have tried to encompass here. All I Need is for those who have found it and those that are still searching… “searching for a life that [hopefully] leaves us with just a little more.” Originally recorded on the first album back when were called just Jeremy & Lynne, “All I Need” was written when it seemed the entire world was in turmoil because of decisions made and actions taken. Working at a factory on third shift, Jeremy penned the lyrics and came up with the chord structure in his head on breaks. Recording the original at night school, Andy played lead guitar on the track after hearing the song approximately two times… (and that might be an overestimation). Hurriedly, friends and local musicians were brought in for the original recording, including Adam 'Bubs' Ranly on Harmonica, Dy'mond Thomas on percussion, Todd Huffman (also the engineer on the original song) on drums and Mark Cantwil on bass guitar. Suddenly, there we were all in Studio A at The International College of Broadcasting without having rehearsed and hoping to strike the match on something cool. Needless to say, this recording was rough, but the heart of the song was solid … and beating. Time passed, as it does, and the song kept coming back upon in conversations inside the band which had subsequently solidified. Eventually, it became clear we had to do something with it and as the idea for this EP took shape there was never really a doubt that All I Need was going to get it’s needed facelift. The songs material and lyrics are hopeful and full of promise, which is a bit of a rarity for us, so we immediately went to one of the most positive people we know, Seth Canan, for the retooling. For the uninitiated, Seth Canan & The Carriers are one of our favorite local Ohio bands and are some of our favorite people in general. Seth Canan, Isaac Schaefer Jr. and Zachary Pack have a sound that is truly their own. Giving the song to Seth to make his own was a no brainer, the main riff, and the second solo are all Seth, and it rings through clear as a bell. It was truly an honor to have him work on this song with us. Very quickly and after only a couple of practices the whole thing was turned over to the capable hands of Patrick Himes at Reel Love Recording in Dayton Ohio and it became the song it is now, a song that is in equal parts The Typical Johnsons and Seth Canan & The Carriers, delivering a solid punch and working as a perfect delivery vehicle for the main point, which is … this love… this true love… this intense burning, life changing love … is All I Need. This isn’t the first or the last song about true love, but it’s ours and we hope you like it and it speaks to some of you in some way.
