Dr. Michael Arnzen (Seton Hill University) presents a public lecture on "The Popular Uncanny" to Neumann University (10/26/2012). For more see http://gorelets.com/uncanny/

Why are people still attracted to iconic stories, artwork and moving pictures that are intended to instill dread and fear in the 21st century? In this presentation, Arnzen (Prof. of English, Seton Hill University) explores how popular culture -- particularly advertising media -- employs and exploits the icons, structures of the uncanny -- for both artistic expression and commercial profit. Topics covered include the uncanny valley, the evolution of the icon of "the scream" in consumer culture, and automatons and dolls as product spokesmen.
