Louis Spohr: "Was treibt den Waidmann in den Wald" WoO 92. Text by Wilhelm Vogel in his play "Der Erbvertrag". Alison Smart, soprano - Sophie Langdon, violin - Hugh Webb, harp - Robert Montgomery, horn - Susan Dorey, cello. This Lied was originally composed for a performance of the drama "Das Majorat", that took place on October 9, 1825 at the Hoftheater Kassel. The author Wilhelm Vogel (1772--1843) had written the dramatised version based on the novel of the same name by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann, that appeared first in 1817 in the second part of his "Nachtstücke". For the performance at the Burgtheater in Vienna on October 22, 1825, Vogel changed the name of the drama to "Der Erbvertrag". As in the novel, the singer of the Lied in the drama is called Seraphine, the young "wunderherrliche" [trans. miraculously wonderful] wife of Baron Roderich, not Emma as indicated in the Viennese first edition, 1826 by Bermann. The designation of "Arie" is likewise not applicable. As accompanying instrument Spohr indicates the harp or the piano. The motives of the hunt and the knightly fight, which both play an important role in the novel and in Vogel's drama, are taken over and implemented musically through the choice of the additional obbligato instrument, the Waldhorn. In his autobiography Spohr amuzingly relates that he himself once played the horn in an orchestra in Erfurt, 1808 for the famous "Fürsten-Congress", in front of an audience which included Napoleon, Zar Alexander I, and the other attending kings and princes of the "Rhein-Bund". Spohr's Lied attained a large circulation in over 40 different single publications. It was published in Prague, Amsterdam, Paris and in London with eight editions. It was also successfully included in numerous concert programs. A French version by Bélanger is also edited in: The first complete and critical Edition of Spohr's Liederin 12 vols. by Prof. Susan Owen-Leinert and Michael Leinert with the German publisher Dohr, Cologne.(see vol. 11 E.D. 29961)
