The « ka » drum, the traditional percussion of Guadeloupe, is central to the music. It’s a legacy that Sonny Troupé perpetuate and confront to jazz. But he’s also influenced by a wide range of music i'm fond is fond of such as soul music, electro, jungle or metal music. The music can be defined as a music where “gwoka”, the traditional music from Guadeloupe, (French West Indies island), is the basis on which everything is built and evolves.
We discovered Sonny Troupé with Voyages et Rêves, a very promising first album with special guest like Kenny Garret, Magic Malik, Christian Laviso...). The second Luminescence was a duet with the pianist player Grégory Privat The last album is called "Reflets Denses" (Dense Reflection)
“A reflection so dense that it becomes another reality, with resemblances due to the real and differences due to the fact that it’s a different entity.” That’s the idea he decided to develop. Resemblance and difference is the duality inherent in his personality. An apparently classical theme can take on electronic contour, a post-modern sound can become the subject of a jazz treatment. Every time, the primary materials (gwo ka music) become the object of a reinterpretation, creating diffractions of the same.
