28 September 2010: an exciting new advanced sonar system was deployed to the Endeavour Ridge hydrothermal vent fields and connected to our observatory. This sonar, called COVIS, will help scientists image "black smoker" plumes emerging from hydrothermal vents in this deep-sea volcanic rift valley.

COVIS, the Cabled Observatory Vent Imaging System, was designed and built by researchers at the University of Washington and Rutgers University. It was deployed from the R/V Thompson and installed by CSSF/ROPOS.
