If you are preparing to time the last Transit of venus for over a hundred years, you may like to have a look at this video I took of the 2004 event. It is much harder to see the exact time that the trailing edge of Venus's disk enters the Sun's disk (second contact) than you may imagine.
I have overlaid a time sample from my IOTA-VTI, which is the best device for this sort of work, but it bears no relation to either the 2006 or 2012 events!
The shimering of the Sun and the atmosphere of the planet work together in obscuring the data.
