12. Maintaining health:
We all talk about health health all the time. We have departments of health, ministries of health and all that, but when we actually see how this issue of health is handled, it is mostly through the fear of disease. Do this, don’t do that because otherwise you will be getting this disease or that disease. Just like be nice, be honest, be truthful because otherwise you will rot in hell, you will be punished in the next life etc etc. That approach does not work, hasn’t worked. Health must be understood in relation to our daily life and in practical terms. So, a very pragmatic and practical definition of health is having adequate physical and mental independence in activities of daily living (ADL). Here the word adequate is very important. Adequate physical and mental independence; not perfect or absolute physical and mental independence, which no one can have. Using technology, medicine, social help and everything else is part of achieving this adequate independence. My own mental and psychological temperament and attitude will determine what is adequate for me at different stages of life. I don’t need to always look for some perfect state of health. I should use all the methods, lifestyle methods, food, physical activity, social engagement, plus whatever medicines I need, whatever other physical and mental tools I need to use, which give me adequate independence. That is the kind of health we need to aim for. This is what will that stop ageing - that is what we will talk about the next time.
