Euclid Quartet performing the first movement (Lento) of Bela Bartok's String Quartet No. 1
Live at Greencastle Summer Music Festival, Greencastle, Indiana on August 9, 2013

Jameson Cooper and Jacob Murphy, violins; Luis Enrique Vargas, viola; Si-Yan Darren Li, cello

In the first movement of this very Romantic early quartet, the young Bela Bartok shares the deep sadness he experienced at his unrequited love for Stefi Geyer. Beginning with the lonely violin duet that opens this movement, the music explores many facets of sadness -- from the tragic to the intimately beautiful. The ending gradually opens up, leading directly into the second movement.
