At the 2016 National Environmental Justice Conference (NEJC), the Federal Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice (EJ IWG) hosted a workshop, in collaboration with the Educate, Motivate, Innovate (EMI) Climate Justice Initiative, to highlight the work of young people in the environmental justice movement. Three students attended the conference to present about the work that they have been doing to not only share their experiences but to also gain valuable insight and advice from other EJ leaders. The EMI Climate Justice Initiative will use a variety of tools to focus on incorporating equity into climate adaptation planning and implementation. The initiative will also focus on the next generation of climate justice leaders and expand partnerships with Minority Serving Institutions, including outreach to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Tribal Colleges and Universities. As part of the initiative, the EJ IWG has commissioned the creation of a video to detail what is the EMI initiative as well as how can students get involved, specifically at the NEJC. This video features Marsha Minter, Associate Director of the Office of Environmental Justice, as well as two of the students that participated in the EMI workshop. This video will be utilized as promotional material, available on the EJ IWG website as well as at IWG appropriate events, to highlight the EMI workshop (to increase student participation) as well as to highlight the overall work of the IWG.
