An electrical transformer in the basement of ProMedica Flower Hospital in Sylvania failed Thursday morning, spewing fumes and fluid into a mechanical room and causing a temporary power outage.

The malfunction created a nasty smell that wafted through the hospital.

Sylvania Fire Department and other emergency crews responded to the Harroun Road facility at 10:30 a.m.

The hospital's surgery ward lost power and as a precaution, the surgical area was evacuated and nine scheduled operations were cancelled.
