When using positional tracking, travel in VR is limited by the physical tracking space as the size of the virtual world rarely matches the physical world. When running into a physical boundary users mush switch to a different mode of travel but these are subject to the following limitations. Teleporting or rotating the game world is disorienting & breaks immersion. Using a joystick for travel is less immersive than positional input. We present ZoomScale: a technique that lets users explore small places using positional tracking and travel larger distances using walking-in-place. ZoomScale is easy to use and maintains a high immersion and doesn't require additional instrumentation. Walking input can also minimize motion sickness.
