A news conference and ribbon cutting was held to kick off the grand opening of a new state-of-the-art, accessible playground for children with disabilities and without at Eastwood Park on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm. Hundreds of children of all abilities can now commence play and try out their new city playground. The event also included free health screenings (blood pressure, osteoporosis, cholesterol, etc.), free face painting, a youth wheelchair basketball game, and many other family activities. The playground is a joint initiative between CVS Caremark, Boundless Playground, the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and the Houston Parks Board, and is funded by a $250,000 grant from the CVS Caremark All Kids Can, and $183,000 provided by Houston Parks and Recreation Department.
Eastwood Park serves more than 13,000 residents in the Greater East End community, and nearly 1,000 children sharing the same zip code as the park have a disability that might restrict them from actively playing on a traditionally designed playground. The new playground replaces a former play structure, originally dedicated in 1996, that was not universally accessible and in need of an update.
CVS Caremark All Kids Can, a program of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and CVS Caremark, is dedicated to making life easier for children with disabilities. Since 2006, CVS Caremark All Kids Can has donated over $4 million to the building of 51 Boundless playgrounds across the country. Unique features of Boundless playgrounds include handicapped-accessible pathways and playground equipment, and therapy seats that have the necessary support for children with low muscle tone. This video aired on the Victor Trevino Live show on Wednesday March 10th, 2010 on Channel 17 via The Houston Media Source Channel on Comcast Cable in Houston, Texas. Some raw video footage was provided by HCC-TV.
