This is a test of the completed Arduino powered ambilight clone I have built, this time with live action video, albeit one with over-the-top colours and bad acting...

The camera throws off the colours slightly, they come out washed out and purple-er than reality, but it is a good example of the smoothness motion

I am currently tweaking the colour balance for the LEDs as i have a warm coloured wall, which throws off the colours slightly. The brightness for the side LEDs needs to be adjusted slightly to make up for the extra width of this TV.

The system has 88 LEDs behind the display, each individually controlled by software.

If you pause the video during fast motion, you will see that he LEDs are actually updated slightly before the video, i have determined this is due to the displays input lag while upscaling with maximum settings. I have since added a slight delay to the LED stream to sync this up.

The TV is a Sony 55X9004A, driven from a 2013 2.5GHz i5 Mac Mini at 1080p.

I wasn't sure if the 2.5GHz i5 was powerful enough to process 88 LEDs, but it only uses 10% CPU to drive the LEDs at any time.
This means there is more than enough headroom to run the lights at 60fps when playing 60fps, and the worst case update rate is 30fps when playing full-size BluRay dumps, while downmixing DTS to stereo, without skipped frames or slowdowns.
