"My Name is Paddy Leary" (Off to Philadelphia) is a stage song. It appears a generation after the great Irish famine, and before the 'Tin Pan Alley' era of popular Irish song in America. You can find it recorded with full orchestra over 100 years ago.
Paddy, from County Tipperary, Ireland is forced from Ireland and his potential sweetheart, Kate Malone. Trying to put his best face forward, in the end he dreams of the day he will return. This 19th century song was quite popular in its time. The Irish at that time found it more possible to return to Ireland, and admit their longing for old connections.
Sung by Mike O'Laughlin of 'Sean Nós Abu !'. Part of the programs in genealogy and history at Irishroots.com. This version was made in preparation for the final album: 'Irish Song, Traditional and Sean Nós', released in 2013.
