In a recent article in Development (Vol 144 Issue 1) Yusuke Toyama and colleagues, working in Singapore and Rennes, investigate the libk between apoptosis, cell adhesion and tissue tension during the development of the adult abdomen in fruit flies.

Proliferation of histoblasts is coupled with the apoptosis and extrusion of larval epidermal cells, as shown in these live imaging movies.
