The fire hydrant exercise is great for activating the glutes prior to a lower body workout. This exercise specifically targets the gluteus medius which is sometimes weak in people with lower back pain.
While on the hands and knees raise one knee out and focus on the glute on that side. Do not rotate the spine to get the leg higher. All movement should come at the hip.
