The remains of 61 people who died with the coronavirus were buried in newly dug graves in a new section in Milan's Cimitero Maggiore on Thursday, after they had been unclaimed by family or friends for five days.

Roberta Cocco, Digital Transformation and Citizens Services at Municipality of Milan, refuted that the new section could be considered a mass grave.

"The Municipality of Milan decided to address this specific green place to those people who are dead without any family, any relatives, no-one who could tell us what they wanted to do with their lovely person," said Cocco, adding that the new section has the capacity for up to 600 people.

"This is not at all a mass grave; this is an area completely devoted to these people who unfortunately were dead without any parents around. This doesn't mean that they do not have parents or family; this simply means that in this specific period after five days of the death we didn't receive any communication how to do with these persons," she said.

Italy has recorded over 189,000 cases of coronavirus since the start of the outbreak. Over 25,000 people have reportedly died with the virus.
