While out surveying for smallmouth bass nests on the Northern Eel River near Liberty Mills, Indiana, Maxwell Mattern and Kyle Boone, Manchester College summer interns, discovered this freshwater mussel. The mussel was identified as Lampsilis cardium (Plain Pocketbook), and is shown in this video displaying to attract host species of fish (bluegill, largemouth and smallmouth bass, sauger, walleye, white crappie and yellow perch). The host species of fish for the glochidia (larval mussels) is a necessary step in the reproductive success of freshwater mussels.
