The USC Schwarzenegger Institute, Common Cause, and the League of Women Voters of Los Angeles invite you to a conversation with David Daley on his book, redistricting reform and the battle being waged, state by state, for control of Congress.

David Daley is the author of “Ratf**ked: The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America's Democracy” and the former editor-in-chief of Salon. He is a digital media fellow at the Wilson Center for the Humanities and the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. He is currently the publisher and CEO of the Connecticut News Project. His work has appeared in New York Magazine, the Boston Globe, USA Today, Rolling Stone, Details and many other publications. He earned his B.A. in political science at Boston College and his M.A. in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Ratf**ked chronicles legislators' and political operatives' efforts to fundamentally rig American democracy through redistricting.

Following Barack Obama’s historic election in 2008, pundits declared the Republican Party dead. However, a small cadre of Republican operatives began plotting their comeback with a simple yet ingenious plan. They focused their money and campaign efforts on a small number of state races that would allow them to reshape state legislatures, who controlled the power to redraw legislative and congressional district lines. In his book, David Daley examines the far-reaching effects of this strategy and its impact on America's electoral map and control of Congress.

Across America, both parties are manipulating districts for political advantage and ignoring the right of the public to fair representation. In addition to the book discussion, we will highlight litigation and legislative efforts designed to fight back against this assault on democracy.
