It's not easy to figure out who is a good programmer or not if you don't know anything about programming. Actually, even programmers have a difficult time with it. This video is a little distinction to help isolate more experienced developers.

00:10 today I'm going to share a distinction to help determine junior, intermediate, senior, and beyond experience levels, to help you make a better hiring decision.

00:27 a distinction I've made with regards to experience levels with software developers is the ability to see different options to solve the same problem.

00:48 for example; an entry level programmer may not be able to figure out a solution to a development problem and may require help.

00:53 a junior level developer will usually find only one way to perform a certain task

01:02 Intermediate programmers may find a few ways to design a solution

01:08 senior developers will usually know many ways and know the one "right way"

01:20 when you get beyond that, the programmer will know that not only are there so many ways to solve a problem, but they will also know that each design has its own benefits and drawbacks. They will also know that each solution may be appropriate to meet some goals but not others.

01:58 if you incorporate this knowledge about experience levels into your interviewing, you will get a firmer handle on the experience level of the programmer being interviewed.

02:15 so how do you incorporate this into your interview? Well, you can ask the programmer how they might implement a feature, and probe for more and more different ways to do it. Then ask which they would pick and why.
