Our understanding of community and connection is changing faster than ever before. We've gone from telegraphs to email, telephone poles to mobile, The Tube to YouTube, encyclopedias to Wikipedia, and Commonplace books to Facebook. There are now more than 2 billion people online around the world, and that number is expected to jump to half the world's population by 2017 (Forrester).
This first issue of Quarterly is an investigation into the future of community. Our goal is to shed light on the breadth of industries being transformed, the relative shortcomings, and more than anything -- the enormous potential. People everywhere are compiling isolated experiences into a bigger picture. They are using the Internet to tackle some of the world's most daunting issues.
