Belated update: Dee-Dee was released.
Dee - Dee was captured by fisherman back in 2008 and released back the same year. The point to this story was should they release him because he was fortunate enough to avoid to get caught for a 100 years?
Anyway thanks for all your comments, I should put this article private because it's already 4 years story...
Saving Dee-Dee the Giant Lobster and bequeathing $12m to a dog
Looks like Dee-Dee the giant lobster has been saved after all. (See Vancouver Sun detailed report and CBC report.) Ms. Shaw, a vegetarian who has been involved with animal rights for 20 years, and two anonymous organizations in Ontario each chip in $1,000 for a total of $3,000 to free Dee-Dee.
Now, some may undoubtedly argue that Ms. Shaw's $1,000 is money well-spent as she is a realtor and getting national TVs and newspapers coverage and exposure for a mere $1,000 is pretty cheap. Some may argue that $3,000 to free a lobster is rather "too much money" or too "strange" (to put it politely). But these moneys are theirs to spend in whatever way they wish (they made those money, not us) so I don't think it is fair for us to be critical here.
For those that think $3,000 is just too much money to spend on freeing a lobster, may I recommend the three blog entries by Nobel Prize economist Prof. Becker (here) and Judge Posner (here and here) discussing the case of Leona Helmsley's bequest of $12 million to her dog and the establishment of a $5 to $8 billions charitable trust dedicated to dogs. (Yes, you read it right, billions.) Please read the posts by Prof. Beck and Judge Posner before you leave comments about Ms. Helmsley's bequest or trust.
