Program Description: This program will allow students to experience and visualize the connections between people of African descent in the U.S. and in the Caribbean. The shared histories of Barbados and Charleston will be explored. That history will be traced to the present day. Students will also be able to experience university education in the Caribbean by having classes at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill, and staying in the residence halls on campus. The program will visit various historical sites in both Charleston and Barbados and encourage students to compare and contrast the experiences. There are two courses offered: AAST 300: Caribbean Social Movements & Immigration; AAST 300: Barbados & the Black Atlantic.
