College is a gateway to new opportunities. Park Center grad, Yasir Abdalrahman, certainly has grand visions for his future at North Hennepin Community College.
"One thing I have a passion about is helping people and making an impact on other people's lives," Abdalrahman said.
He chose North Hennepin as the place to begin his journey.
"I don't want to graduate with a lot of debt, so I just wanted to save money and to get the best education that I can," Abdalrahman said.
Thanks to a new program announced by Minnesota State universities, Abdalrahman and other students like him will have an easier path to achieving their goals.
"Our students transfer to and from the 2-year schools to the 4-year schools quite often," said Landon Pirius, North Hennepin Community College's vice president for academic & student affairs. "Many times, our students will transfer. They'll transfer successfully, but they may not come in with the number of credits that they had taken at the 2-year institution."
In the past, that meant students wouldn't come into their new school as a full-fledged junior. Now, that's all changed, as long as they maintain a 2.0 GPA.
"This new program allows for students to come in, they get guaranteed admission to the four-year institution, and they are able to come in at junior status, which is huge," Pirius said.
It's huge because students wouldn't have to worry about wasting money on credits that may not have transferred over to one of the seven colleges in the Minnesota State system.
"We see it as both a selling point for brand new students who are interested in going to college, but our current students who are wondering 'Well when should I transfer?' Well now it's clear, you get your associate of arts degree, you complete it at North Hennepin and then you transfer," Pirius said.
It's a benefit for both the college, and for students like Abdalrahman.
"It'll make the admissions process more easier and more smooth," he said.
While the new program guarantees admission and full credit transfer to any of the seven Minnesota State Universities, it does not guarantee admittance to specific majors.
