My training philosophy :

I always feel like I am dreaming when I am training.

Removing the conscious and rational mind to access the infinite creativity and full blown madness that flow from your subconscious is key for artists and writers.

I approach training in the same way. Unlock your subconsciousness and you will have no restrain on how much you can lift.

And just as Freudians believe that 99 percent of our minds are locked away and stored as raw subconscious energy that can pretty much do and think up anything, the body is the same way.

Artists experience the "flow", just as athletes experience being "in the zone".

Most people only use a very small portion of their actual strength and power when they are performing because their bodies protect themselves from the release of this energy. And because of this, they cannot tap into the potential strength and power that are locked inside their tendons and muscles and nervous systems.

You know why one of those grandmothers can lift up a car to save a baby during a life and death situation? Because at that moment, they have no choice but to release this "brake" that blocks most of her strength.

(But afterwards she rips their muscles off of her tendons and bones because they can't take the pressure)

What an athlete should do is train himself to deliberately unlock this potential power on call. Professionals do this very well and can use up to 90 percent of their strength and power.

This is how a 150 pound Olympic lifter can put up 400 pounds on the clean - he is activating nearly ALL of his muscles.

By analogy, what artists and writers, or anyone who wishes to unlock subconscious potential is to knock away the rational and the conscious mind so that he can use that 99 percent of raw creative power that is stored inside and let it flow the top.

This is what people mean when they say to "free your mind".

This is very difficult to do. And like the athletes who injure themselves this way, people who release their subconscious often go mad.

ps this is why athletes seem to not be "trying" when they perform at their best. When lifters set PRs and bball players go up for the best dunks.... they will tell you that they are barely using any strength. Artists and writers can tell you the same thing - that they are not deliberately thinking hard when their juices are flowing. Conscious thinking can sometimes get in the way. The harder you think, the thicker your conscious mind becomes and the harder it is to let out your subconscious.

"The paradox of bodybuilding is that it is ultimately an exercise of metaphysics that unfolds back on itself...where the immateriality and materiality of the self become tangled in a dialectic dance of destruction and creation.

To build muscles, one has to overcome the body with the mind -- to transcend over the corporality of the flesh through the spiritual exploitation of the will. However, the more the mind is in command, the bigger, the more beasty the body becomes. The increase in the physical realm automatically calls for an increase in the mental realm and vice versa. When the body becomes bigger, it takes over the overall proportion of the self to dominate the mind. The mind then has no choice but to insert more power upon the body in order for itself to regain control.

The ironic part is that this very process of "mind over matter" only leads to the growth of more matter to overcome. In other words, the mind attempts to destroy the body in order to free itself from its material trappings. However, the mere act of destruction only generates more physicality to prevail over, where the spirit's very own act of transcendence actually re-renders itself to become its very own act of imprisonment. So at the end of the day, mind and matter become tangled in a feedback loop that attempts to destroy, while at the same time, establishing and creating their very own opposites" - Frank Yang
