Whilst England were beating Italy 2-1 in a friendly in Switzerland, the biggest news of the transfer window was announced, that a deal had been made between Arsenal and Manchester United over Robin Van Persie.

After private talks between Wenger and Fergie, the Gunners agreed to let their star striker leave for £24m. Van Persie will now have a medical with United in the next 48 hours, before putting pen to paper and signing for the Red Devils.

Van Persie will be given a four year contract with United on wages of £200,000 a week, a package worth almost £40m to the Holland international.

The Premier League's top scorer last season with 30 goals, Van Persie made it clear that after seven trophyless years he would not sign a new contact with Arsenal.

The Gunners knew that with only one year left on his current deal, Van Persie could leave for nothing at the end of next season. But they were still resistant to offers from the two Manchester clubs and Serie A winners Juventus, as they demanded over £20m for the player.

United winning the race to sign the striker is a coup for the club as Ferguson will hope that the firepower from a Van Persie and Wayne Rooney partnership up front will see the Reds propelled to the top of the table above reigning champions Manchester City.

Transfers between the two rivals are incredbily rare, with Van Persie becoming the first player since Viv Anderson way back in 1987 to switch from Arsenal to United
