Brandon, Kaneisha and Latisha are members of the Youth Council of Memphis Youth That Care, which is affiliated with TN Voices for Children/ JustCare Family Network.
The Youth Council have chosen to focus on infant mortality as their cause because Memphis is #1 in the U.S. in infant mortality, which directly impacts young people living in poverty. They also chose an issue that was local as well as global.
They are attempting to solve this problem by speaking up and out to local and state politicians to increase funding; building an awareness campaign for teens; and seeking to have a presence on their local school board. The Youth Council is also forming strategic alliances with partner organizations that will allow them to push their social justice agendas to the forefront.
Our plan of action differs from what's currently being done because there are no youth organizations advocating on behalf of this issue in Tennessee, says the youth. They've decided that in order to affect change around issues pertaining to their age group, they must have voice.
