Idiot Box Ep 19: Should Community be Saved or Canceled by NBC? Starring Donald Glover & Joel McHale

In SideReel's new TV commentary webseries, Idiot Box, TV addicts Kyle and Jesse talk about whether or not NBC should keep Community on the air. Find out what Kyle and Jesse think Community's fate should be, then weigh in with your thoughts!

Transcript:
Kyle: Welcome to Idiot Box. Community, the critical darling, the sort of redheaded stepchild of the Thursday night line up, has been pulled from the midseason schedule. Jesse, I'm an NBC programming exec. Pitch me why it should come back.

Jesse: So there are two big reasons why this should be. One is on the level of the show, ones on the level of the network. So, starting with the show. It's a roster of really talented comedians that I think you want to keep in NBC's orbit. From Joel McHale to Donald Glover to several others... so on that level, it just works. On a network level, it just makes a lot of sense to have a comedy--even if the ratings aren't where they should be or where we'd like the to be--a comedy that's taking chances, that's taking risks, that's defining itself as sort of the edge of comedy right? NBC is the home of comedy on Thursday nights and I think Community, even though it has low viewership numbers is a big reason why that remains...

Kyle: Okay, but that said given that I'm beholden to my advertisers and my corporate hierarchy structure... how can I justify a show that doesn't pull in numbers, doesn't really get awards...

Jesse: It's widely acknowledged by critics as one of the... sort of edgiest comedies right? It's the one that's pushing sitcoms in new directions. It's constantly taking chances and innovating. Sure, sometimes that doesn't work, but it's worth it for a network that calls itself home to Thursday night comedies and to many people as producing the best sitcoms on TV to have this critical darling even if it's not quite attracting the rating numbers.

Kyle: But I would argue that critical acclaim does not matter when no one is tuning in to watch something. If I as a programming executive am figuring out what will work on Thursday night, why wouldn't I bet on something in the development track? Something that will be coming out soon with bigger names attached or you know an untried format versus something that for what... 3 seasons now? 4? has not worked.

Jesse: Well, I don't think it's clear that it's not working. I think that it's got buzz. I mean if you look at what happened when they took it off the mid-season roster there was an outcry. And it wasn't an outcry among just a giant demo or something like that. It was an outcry among the crucial demo, which are the people that are plugged in, the people that are like on the leading edge. Critics love Community. So if you put all 3 of those things together, I think it makes sense to stick it out at least one more season.

Kyle: So, if you are a network exec, would you keep Community around? Given that it's numbers aren't really that great and it hasn't been winning awards? Versus you know, bringing back some new content. Let us know in the comments.

Community is the best comedy on right now. The execs should learn from their mistakes, out the top of my mind I can think of three. Firefly. Arrested Development. Terminator: The Sara Connor Chronicles. Mind you the Firefly only got 12 episodes and look at what it accomplished. Arrested Development was cut way too short. Terminator could've change a franchise. Don't cancel Community!

Community rocks better not cancel it...

Oh, and to the programming exec that said critical acclamation doesn't matter, and that ratings are the only thing that matters, please go die, your overly capitalistic beliefs are what is wrong with modern media.

Get that shit off NBC and onto a more suitable network, it's obviously not appreciated. But yes, save it for sure.
