John Loegering demonstrates how to place a 'bud cap' on a white pine tree. Bud capping is a common technique to protect pine seedlings from overwinter deer browsing. Often crews of volunteers deploy the caps each fall, preferable just after the leaves fall (young green pines stand out on the forest floor then).
Dr. Loegering is a wildlife specialist for the University of Minnesota Extension Service (http://extension.umn.edu/) and teaches vertebrate ecology at the University of Minnesota Crookston campus.
