During cell division, microtubules emanating from each of the spindle poles meet and overlap in the spindle's midzone. Growing microtubules (blue) under controlled conditions in a test-tube, EMBL scientists identified 2 proteins that are sufficient to maintain this overlap (pink) constant once it has reached a certain size - a function which is crucial for cells to divide normally.
