Even though Dr. McCoy always bossed Nurse Chapel around in sickbay, he couldn't help falling in love with her in the process, but now that Christine's romantically involved with Spock, McCoy can't help but be envious. McCoy tries at every chance to tell the lovely nurse how he feels, but he's always interrupted by something else happening on the ship. Running out of time and answers, the good doctor turns to Kirk for advice. Spock, however, senses that McCoy wants Christine and decides to challenge the doctor to a duel with the lirpa. McCoy refuses, stating that Christine is Spock's consort, and it will remain that way even if it means McCoy has to suffer with a broken heart. Christine hears the conversation, and after the room has cleared, she approaches Dr. McCoy, hands him his medical kit with a note inside, and says, "I'm sorry, Leonard."
