With no fancy tools, just some grid and the edge of a piece of paper, you can plot your heights and get freaked out by the dramatic hills you have to climb.

Contour interval on the map shown is 10 metres. Add 1 or 2 minutes per contour uphill for an approximation of your walking time. Adjust this time as you learn how fast you or your group walks.
